featured designer…david sipi

one of the coolest benefits of running napa farmhouse 1885™ is the opportunity to meet really amazing artists and craftspeople….david sipi matches that description perfectly.  i met david through a friend of a friend, and immediately knew we had to carry and showcase his beautiful furniture collection.

david is a native californian...was born in san francisco….raised in the napa valley...and currently lives in a fantastic, remodeled (by david of course) home in vallejo.

david has always worked in creative fields...was a gourmet chef for many years...and worked at some of the best restaurants in northern california and santa fe, new mexico.  eighteen years into this “first” career, david developed a debilitating industrial disability (bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome)..and...7 surgeries & 12 procedures later…his days as a professional chef were over…he just could not perform the rapid repetitive motion required from a top chef…in my experience, truly creative people find other outlets for their talent and david is no exception.  while  in the midst of his home’s remodel, he built a table from some of the scraps of wood torn down from the property...he loved the look of the table and was inspired to reuse materials otherwise headed for the landfill.

david  discovered that the slow, thoughtful work required to beautifully craft furniture was perfect for his injury…allowed the muscles and joints of his hands to be used…without the stress and overwork other tasks required… he also discovered a passion for finding eco-friendly solutions for salvaged items and 100% of his collection is handcrafted using reused, recycled and/or repurposed materials...how perfect is that for napa farmhouse 1885™?

Move over Batman and Robin!  A new dynamic duo is
here to save the planet!
When the mother-daughter team, Janet Sylvain and Summer Smith, create custom home furnishings, they keep a watchful eye on today’s biggest villain: Landfill Waste.  Odd
shaped scrap deemed unusable by some are rescued and transformed into table runners, pillows and quilts.  At their store, Pieced on Earth, their designs reflect today’s lifestyles; from traditional to contemporary, from warm to wild.  Come visit their showroom at 340 Georgia Street in Historic Old Town Vallejo.     Holy Scraps Battmom! Those pillows will look great on your sofa!

for the non-sewers in the group (which includes yours truly) the  battmom  reference  is  a  play on words...they are both moms…and  batt is a nod to  the batting used between the sides of  quilts…clever, clever women!  i  think you will love the items in our collection...but if you are interested in custom work please  email me with your contact info and i  will take it from there…

“About Me: My mom loves to tell the story about my first “craft business”. At about 12 years old, I got the idea to paint and bead those plain white Keds sneakers that you could by at Long’s Drugs for $4.99. I made them mostly as gifts for my friends and tried to personalize them with meaningful objects. Sometimes I sold them to an admirer, which led to secret fantasies about a giant mega store of personalized craft shoes and my name in lights!Friends and family are used to receiving handmade gifts from me. They do a good job of pretending they are thrilled and it saves me from having to go to the crowded, boring mall shops, and lets me exercise my creative prowess. Which is another reason I started Napa Nest. I wanted a reason to push myself, experiment, and contribute to the community. Our vision at the Nest is definitely a green one—to live creatively and give generouslyCreative living includes looking for ways to reduce waste, and this gave me the idea for the C.C.C—Creative Coffee Clutch. A coworker of mine has a growing stack of those cardboard coffee sleeves towering above her desk. She saves them all and probably recycles them, but I’ve found a better solution. After thrifting a book of upholstery fabric samples, I turned them into fashionable cloth coffee sleeves, that you can keep indefinitely! Carry one in your bag and see how many conversations they start. Well Mom, guess what you’re getting for Christmas this year!”
